5 tips to regain self-esteem at work and start 2022 on the right foot
Website joins Facebook, Google and others against anti-piracy project
Wikipedia’s entry into the group of big ones protesting the approval of SOPA contributes to the weakening of the project. With the tweet “We’ve got to send a BIG message to Washington”, founder Jimmy Wales promises to stop his English version for 24 hours on January 18th. “Notice to students! Do your homework in advance. Wikipedia will protest a bad law on Wednesday! #soup,” Wales added on Monday.
He is not alone; gained support from Reddit and Boing Boing. The “Stop Online Piracy Act”, as it was originally called, wants to update the country’s Intellectual Property Law. This implies fighting online piracy in the name of the audiovisual, phonographic and publishing industries’ interests, and they want harsh punishments for in their opinion, it favors the practice in the digital field. Among the project’s defenders is Rupert Murdoch, owner of News Corp. This Monday he picked a fight with Google by saying that the company is a leader in online piracy.
Facebook, Google, Amazon and other partners had already threatened a blackout if the lobby around the project gained muscle. But there are no official dates. The duel divides opinions due to its interference with freedom of expression and its character considered rigorous. The internet giants don’t want to be held responsible for third-party links that are included in their domains. The fight will still pay off. With information from Folha.com
