More than 80 percent of companies believe that Web 2.0 technologies will continue to gain in importance. 60 percent of them want to further expand Web 2.0 technologies in the future. This is the result of a survey by the industry association BITKOM in cooperation with the provider Oracle.

BITKOM surveyed over 400 companies on the subject of Web 2.0. “The new technologies originally used in the private sector, such as blogs, have made the leap into companies – as a rule, the path goes in the other direction,” explains BITKOM President Prof. August-Wilhelm Scheer. According to the association, blogs, wikis and the like have increased the productivity of companies and have found a permanent place in work processes.

Companies use so-called wikis particularly frequently. In this way, employees, partners or customers can read the content of these websites online, develop them further and determine the structure. By setting up web communities in companies, specialized contact persons for special tasks and problems can be found quickly. This also simplifies collaboration across departments and locations. Blogs offer the possibility of documenting work processes and making them transparent.

Two thirds of those companies that already use blogs, wikis or social networks have had positive experiences. “Companies can research information faster and more easily and thus react better to new market trends. Another positive side effect: The employees deal actively with the company’s IT,” says the report. The study also makes it clear what reasons speak against the introduction of Web 2.0 applications in individual cases. Some companies say that the benefits are unclear to them. In addition, the respondents fear security risks and too much effort.

The BITKOM organization represents more than 1,200 companies in the IT, telecommunications and new media sectors, of which over 900 are direct members. The association will be presenting the study results in detail at KnowTech 2008 on October 8th and 9th in Frankfurt am Main.
