Cardmakers not happy with price reduction HD4870

The previously announced price drop for the Radeon HD4870 and HD4850 has been met with resistance. However, the resistance does not come from competitors, but from the manufacturers of the final cards.

The HD4870 (512MB) should get a suggested retail price of $149, according to AMD. This would allow the card to compete with the then just announced GTS250 (1GB).

AMD does not make the end products, the cards, however, but leaves this to external manufacturers. These manufacturers believed that the HD4870 does not have to compete with the GTS250, but that the faster GTX260 is the real competitor and the announced price drop is going too far. The HD4850 (1GB) could go to $149.

However, the card makers are under fire on both sides, as NVIDIA responded to AMD’s price cut with its own price drop for the GTX260. The HD4870 will eventually have to come along.
