“Cyberpunk 2077” under fire – now Sony is withdrawing the game from the PS Store

It seems that 2020 is not a bad year for the Polish studio CD Projekt Red, which created the game “Cyberpunk 2077”.

The most anticipated game of the year, Cyberpunk 2077 even got some decent reviews. But the game is now facing criticism due to bugs and underdeveloped versions for earlier generations of consoles, which is why Sony has now withdrawn it from PlayStation Store. People who have already purchased this title also have the option to request a refund when purchasing the digital version. This comes just days after Sony has refused to give its customers a refund by asking them to wait while the game is fixed.

Following Sony’s recent statement, some users who logged into their PlayStation Network account have been given the option of a refund for their Cyberpunk 2077 purchase without giving any reason. According to the returns page, Sony will first confirm that the user has purchased Cyberpunk 2077 through PlayStation Store, after which the return process will begin.

However, the completion of the refund will vary depending on the payment method and financial institution. The PS Store game is no longer available for PS4 or PS5 users.

CD Projekt RED informed investors:

The Management Board of CD PROJEKT SA with its seat in Warsaw (hereinafter referred to as the “Company”) publishes the decision of Sony Interactive Entertainment (hereinafter “SIE”) to remove until further notice the digital version of Cyberpunk 2077 from sale from PlayStation Store. The decision was made after the Company’s consultations with SIE representatives regarding the possibility of returning the game to people who purchased it in a digital version via PlayStation Store and would like to return it. All digital copies of the game sold so far through PlayStation Store remain available for use by existing buyers. Players can invariably purchase a boxed version of the game direct or mail order. Both digital and physical copies of the game will be continuously supported and will receive future updates from the Company.

Cyberpunk 2077 met with huge opposition from the gaming community, especially from older console generations, who complained that the game was full of bugs and terrible graphics. Developer CD Projekt Red’s share prices fell by as much as 50% earlier this week, forcing the company to urgently meet investors to clarify what went wrong.

The vice president of business development at CD Projekt Red, Michał Nowakowski also admitted that the company focused on the next generation consoles – Xbox Series S / X and PlayStation 5 and was not ready for the older generation consoles (Xbox One X, Xbox One S and Sony PlayStation 4).

CD Projekt also published an apology letter suggesting that two major patches will be released in January and February, which should “address the most visible problems faced by players on last-gen consoles.” Deleting them will have a big impact on the game, even if existing customers should be able to access the game if they purchased it and did not request a refund.
