Games delivered more than movies in 2008

It has been known for years that the games industry is large. Last year, this industry even managed to beat the film and video industry.

This concerns the so-called ‘packaged home entertainment’, or games vs DVD and Blu-ray. In total, $61 billion of these items were sold worldwide in 2008, of which $32 billion were games. That was a 20% increase for games from 2007, while movies were down 6% at $29 billion. The Wii is said to be largely responsible for the increase in game sales.

2009 also looks set to be the year for games. A total of $63 billion is expected to be spent, of which $36 billion is for games. That leaves $27 billion for movies.
