- How to change your PS4 profile password
- How to change your PSN password
Before getting to the heart of this guide and showing you, in practice, how to change password on PS4, I believe it is my duty to provide you with some clarifications regarding the types of “access key” that can be used on the console.
In the current state of things, the types of passwords that can be set on PlayStation 4 are at least three.
- System password – this access key is used to impose a series of very specific restrictions on the console, such as blocking the creation of new users or filters for Web content, apps, games, and so on.
- Profile password – it is a password that can block access to a specific user profile configured on the PlayStation.
- PSN password – this password is used, instead, to protect your PlayStation Network account (essential to take advantage of many features of the PS4, including the use of PlayStation Plus).
As you may have easily guessed, these three “passwords” dominate very different aspects of the PS4 user experience and are absolutely unrelated to each other. I consider it necessary to specify that, in case of loss, it is possible to recover only the password associated with the PSN: to reset the other two codes, however, it is necessary to proceed with a complete reset of the console.
How to change the password of the PS4 system
If you are interested in changing the password you set for limit some functions of the PS4 (e.g. prevent the creation of new users, apply the web filter or the content filter), then you will be pleased to know that this is really a breeze.
First, turn on the PlayStation 4 and, using the directional arrows of the pad, calls up the main menu of the system and access the section Settingsby selecting the icon toolbox and pressing the button X of the controller.
Then, go to the section Content Filtering / Family Management and access the area PS4 System Limitations: at this point, if you had previously set a password, enter it using the keys left, right, up, down, R1, R2, L1, L2, square And triangle; if, on the other hand, it is the first time you access this area, press the button four consecutive times square, to enter the default passcode (0000).
At this point, the game is done: to change the password to be used to unlock the system restrictions, select the item Change system restriction passcode, enter the previously used password, using the appropriate keys (or the PS4 default lock password, if you have never changed it) and, when prompted, enter the new one code twice in a row.
Note: There is no suitable procedure for recovering the code dedicated to the PS4 settings lock. This means that, in case of loss, you will be forced to reset the console to restore it and / or cancel the restrictions set.
How to change your PS4 profile password
If, on the other hand, it is in your interest to change the password you use to access yours user profile on the PlayStation 4 (thus preventing other people from accessing your saves, your game preferences and all other data strictly related to your profile), the steps you need to follow are slightly different than those seen previously.
For starters, log in to Settings of the PS4 by selecting the icon in the shape of toolbox, go to the section Users and, from there, access the areas Login settings And Access codes management.
At this point, if you have never used this feature before, select the item Set Passcode: Login for PS4, create a password to be used to protect your profile by using the keys left, right, up, down, R1, R2, L1, L2, square And triangle, and enter it twice consecutively in the appropriate fields that are proposed to you.
To change your old password, however, you must select the item Change passcode, enter the code in use inside the boxes displayed on the screen and type, twice consecutively, the new code access.
If multiple user profiles are configured on the PlayStation 4 and you want to change the access code for each of them, press and hold the button PS of the pad (the central one, with the PlayStation logo), select the item Change user from the on-screen menu, choose the profile on which you are interested to act and repeat the same steps seen above to make the desired change.
To save the changes made, you must log out of your profile (by pressing and holding the PS button and choosing the item Log out of the PS4 located in the menu that appears) or restart the PS4.
