How to choose headphones for PS4

Before explaining to you how to connect headphones to PS4, let me give you some “tips” on the headphones to buy. Or rather, let me refer you to my buyer’s guide on PS4 headphones, where you can find all the information you need about choosing headphones and, more importantly, a selection of the best headphones for PS4 (both wireless and with cable) currently available on the square.

Once you have chosen and purchased the headphones that best suit your needs (and your budget, since there are really some for all budgets), take a few minutes of free time and find out how to connect them to your PS4 by following the instructions below. .

How to connect headphones to PS4 via cable

Would you like to connect a pair of “traditional” headphones with a cable to the PS4? Then know that there is absolutely no problem: all you have to do is connect the headphones to the input on the controller (the classic 3.5mm headphone port) and configure the console to use the headphones as an audio device. output (and input, if the headphones have a built-in microphone).

After connecting the headphones to the input on the PS4 controller (on the back of the same), press and hold the button PlayStation for a couple of seconds, until the side menu appears. At this point, select the item Audio / Devices from the bar that appeared on the left of the PS4 menu, go to the option Play audio through headphones, press the button X on your controller and choose the option All audio from the menu that opens.

From the same screen, you can also adjust the volume of the audio that should be output from the headphones (by selecting the option Volume control (headphones)) and, if the latter have a built-in microphone, the volume of the microphone (by selecting the option Adjust the microphone level).

If, after connecting the headphones to the PS4 controller, you continue to hear audio through the TV or, in any case, the sound is not playing in the headphones, proceed as follows: access the menu Settings of PlayStation 4 by selecting the toolbox icon located at the top right of the console’s main menu, then go to Devices> Audio Devices> Output Device and select the item Headphones with microphone connected to the controller.

After this step, go to the item Play audio through headphones and, if necessary, choose the option All audio from the menu that opens: in this way, all the sounds played by PS4 will be sent to the headphones (otherwise in the headphones you would only hear the chat audio, while the game audio would continue to come out from the TV).

If you want the headphones to be used as the default audio device every time you connect them to the PS4 controller, put the check mark next to the item Automatically change output device.

From the same screen, you can also adjust the volume of the headphones (option Volume control (headphones)) and, if the latter have an integrated microphone, the volume of the microphone (by selecting the option Adjust the microphone level and then using the adjustment bar on the screen that opens).

Note: if you bought a couple of USB headphones, you can follow the same instructions as above by connecting the headphones to the USB port of the console instead of the audio input of the controller.

How to connect wireless headphones to PS4

The wireless headphones for PS4 they work through a dongle (i.e. a USB stick) or a base to be connected to the USB port and to the console’s optical audio output (the latter is not available on the Slim model of the console, so be careful when purchasing). Once the connection is established, simply access the console settings and set the headphones as the default audio output and input device (if there is a built-in microphone).

Going into more detail, if you have purchased a pair of headphones equipped with USB dongle, you have to connect the dongle to thePS4 optical audio output via the supplied cable, after which you have to insert the dongle into the USB port console and configure the headset as the default output / input device on PS4.

Then go to the menu Settings of the PlayStation, go up Audio and screen, then on Audio output settings and set the option Main exit on Digital out (optical) and the option Audio format (priority) on Linear PCM. In the main output menu, make sure that there is a check mark only on the items related to the type of audio support from the headphones (eg. Linear PCM 44.1 kHz/Linear PCM 48 kHz or Dolby Digital 5.1). To learn about the type of audio support from the headphones, consult their manual.

After this step, go to the menu Settings> Devices> Audio Devices> Output Device PS4 and select the name of yours headphones from the screen that opens. Repeat the operation in the menu Settings> Devices> Audio Devices> Input Device (if the headphones are equipped with a microphone) and adjust the input and output volume using the appropriate adjustment bars (as I also explained to you in the chapter of the tutorial dedicated to headphones with cable).

In the menu for Default Output Device, make sure the option Play audio through headphones is set to All audio, so that all the sounds played by the PS4 are conveyed through the headphones (otherwise you can choose to hear only the chat audio in the headphones).

Did you buy a headset with a base instead of a USB dongle? No problem. Connect the base to one of the USB ports and tooptical audio output console (using the appropriate cables supplied) and then set the headphones as the default output / input device as I explained a few lines above.

Finally, I would like to point out that if you have purchased a pair of official PlayStation headphones, you can install the accompanying application of the headphones from the PlayStation Store and adjust the settings of the headphones (e.g. the presets to be used to equalize the sound) through it.

Note: if you have problems playing audio through the headphones, try to repeat the pairing procedure between the dongle (or base) and the headphones by pressing the appropriate buttons on the two devices. Since the steps to take may vary from headset to headset, I invite you to consult the manual of the headphones you purchased to know the exact procedure to follow.

How to connect Bluetooth headphones to PS4

Own a couple of Bluetooth headphones and would you like to know how to use them with your PS4? Unfortunately, the Sony home console only supports very few headphones based on Bluetooth technology (more particularly those that use Bluetooth 4.0 technology and the HSP protocol). However, the last word is not said!

By purchasing a external Bluetooth adapter and by connecting it to the USB port of your PS4, you can in fact, overcome the limits imposed by Sony on its console and use any pair of Bluetooth headphones for games, chats, movies and any other content played on the PlayStation. You just have to be careful to buy a good quality product, as a poor quality adapter could lead to delays in the reproduction of the audio and, as easily understood, to a poor quality of the reproduced sound.

If you want some advice, take a “ride” on Amazon or other online stores and look for adapters that have a high score and a series of positive comments from users: you should get away with spending less than 20 euros.

Once you have purchased the Bluetooth adapter, connect it to the USB port of the PS4, insert the microphone adapter into thecontroller audio input and performs the pairing of the device with your Bluetooth headphones by pressing the appropriate button on it.

When the operation is completed, enter the menu related to audio devices on PS4 (Settings> Devices> Audio Devices) and set the Bluetooth adapter as the default output and input device, as I also explained to you in the previous chapters of this tutorial.

At this point, the audio of the PlayStation 4 should be delivered through the Bluetooth adapter and, consequently, through your wireless headphones thus bypassing the PS4 restrictions on Bluetooth headphones. Happy?
