- Preliminary operations
- Erase everything from iPhone via iOS
- Erase everything from iPhone via iTunes
- Erase everything from the iPhone “manually”
As anticipated at the beginning, before explaining how to do to be able to delete everything from your iPhone I would like to show you how to make a backup of the data on it so that you can access it at the right time without any kind of problem. To do this you can act either directly from iOS, the operating system in use on your iPhone by means of iTunes, the computer software through which to play multimedia files and manage iDevices.
In the first case, just grab the device, unlock it, access the home screen, tap on the icon Settings (the one in the shape of gear), tap the Your name from the screen that opens and suasamente on the wording iCloud.
Then check that all the levers that you can see in correspondence with the item Apps that use iCloud are moved to ON (and if not, you can enable them) and above all make sure that in correspondence with the voice ICloud Backup there is the wording Yup (and also here, if this is not the case, enable the function yourself).
Then stop on the item ICloud Backup and in the new screen that appears make sure that the lever in correspondence with the item Back up now be on ON. In this way, the iPhone will be backed up automatically every time the device is connected to a power source, locked and connected to a Wi-Fi network. If you want, you can still “force” the backup to run simply by selecting the option Back up now which is below.
If, on the other hand, you want to backup your iPhone via iTunes, connect the iPhone to the computer using the relative Lightning cable and wait for the iTunes window to be visible on the desktop. Keep in mind that on Mac iTunes is available “as standard”, while on Windows it must be downloaded separately via the appropriate download page.
If this is the first time you connect the iPhone to the computer, you will also need to authorize the connection between the two devices by pressing the button first Authorize on the phone screen, by typing the unlock code (if present) of the device on the display of the same and then on the button Continues that appears on the computer desktop.
Then click on the icon with the phone at the top left of the software toolbar, click on the menu item File, select Devices and then press on Transfer purchases from “iPhone name” (instead of “first name” you will find the name you assigned to the iPhone). In this way you can copy all the apps and multimedia content that you have downloaded so far on the device to your computer.
Then select the item Summary from the bar on the left, locate the section Backup on the right and make sure the option is selected This computer (if not, take care of yourself). Then click on the button Back up now always attached to the iTunes window to create a backup of all the data contained in the phone and that’s it.
Once this is done, make sure you have the item selected Summary from the left sidebar. You will then find yourself in the backup settings screen.
For more details about the steps to be taken to perform the backup, both for what concerns iCloud and iTunes, you can read the instructions contained in my tutorial dedicated to how to backup iPhone.
Another thing you need to do before you can wipe all your data from iPhone is to turn off Find my iPhone, the anti-theft function of iOS, since when it is enabled it prevents you from returning the phone to its factory settings.
To do this, go to the section Settings of iOS, stop on Your name from the screen that opens, presses on iCloud, then on Find my iPhone, move up OFF the switch that you find in correspondence with the wording Find my iPhone in the new screen that appears, type in your Apple ID password and that’s it.
If you need more details about Find my iPhone, you can consult my article dedicated to how to track down a stolen mobile phone through which I proceeded to talk to you about it in an even more comprehensive way.
Erase everything from iPhone via iOS
At this point, I would say that we can finally move on to actual action. So if you want to understand how to delete everything from your iPhone, I inform you that this is an operation that can be carried out comfortably and directly from iOS without necessarily having to go through the computer. You ask me how? I’ll explain it to you right away.
To begin with, grab your iPhone, unlock it and access the home screen, then stop on the icon of Settings, select the item General from the displayed screen, scroll down and step up Reset.
Now, select the item Initialize content and settings to restore the iPhone to its factory state by removing all content stored on it as well as deleting settings and data. Then type in the unlock code of your device and confirm the execution of the operation by tapping the button that is shown to you at the bottom of the screen. Done!
Within a few moments the iPhone will turn off automatically, you will then see the apple logo appear on the screen with a progress bar indicating the progress of the operation, in fact, and when the procedure is completed you will find yourself in front of the initial configuration screen of the device.
Now, if you have to give the iPhone to a third party, turn it off and then let the future owner perform the configuration, otherwise follow the simple instructions on the screen to be able to resume using your iDevice as you did until before removing all the data. If you see fit, you can also restore your data from the backup at this stage (if you made it on iTunes).
In addition to the function to erase everything from the iPhone mentioned above, I point out that there are also other data removal options available that turn out to be a little less, let’s say, drastic. You will find them indicated below and you can always select them from the screen Reset attached to iOS settings.
- Reset settings – Allows you to reset all iOS settings without erasing data.
- Reset Network Settings – Allows you to reset the wireless network and data connection configuration.
- Reset keyboard dictionary – It allows torestore the keyboard settings to the factory state.
- Reset Home Screen Layout – Only reset the default icon order in Home screen.

Erase everything from iPhone via iTunes
Do you prefer to erase everything from your iPhone by acting from iTunes? It can be done. You ask me how? I’ll tell you right away, it’s very simple, don’t worry.
The first move you need to make is to connect your iDevice to the computer using the appropriate Lightning cable. Then wait for the iTunes window to appear on the screen and click on the icon phone which appears in the upper left part of the same.
Once you have completed the procedure by which to delete everything from the iPhone, iTunes will ask you if it is your intention to configure the device as a new one or if you prefer to restore the applications and data from the previous backup on it. If you have to sell the Device to third parties or you intend to configure the iPhone as if it were a new device, put the check mark next to the item Set up as a new iPhone and follow all the steps of the procedure that is proposed to you on the screen. If, on the other hand, you intend to configure the newly formatted iPhone by restoring the applications and data from the previous backup, select the second option.
Erase everything from the iPhone “manually”
As anticipated at the beginning of the article, if you prefer you can delete everything from your iPhone also by acting “manually” on each element, without therefore going to carry out the general reset of the device, a practice that proves useful mostly to gain valuable space occupied unnecessarily.
Personally, I do not recommend carrying out a procedure of this type as it is excessively long, laborious and decidedly impractical, especially in the case of a large amount of data but if you nevertheless feel it is more appropriate to proceed in this way you are free to do as best as possible. believe, of course.
Basically what you need to do is remove apps, photos, videos, music etc. which do nothing but take up storage space on your device. To find out how to do this, you can rely on the information I have provided you in my article on how to free up space on the iPhone through which I have dealt with the subject in great detail.
