You are really happy with what this popular streaming platform offers, however you have noticed that the quality of the movies and TV series played on your TV is not as high as you would expect, despite the fast connection speed and the TV supporting content in HD.
Maybe I figured out where the catch lies!
Most likely, your friend, to save you some money, has activated the basic Netflix plan, which does not provide for the viewing of content in HD or Ultra HD: to remove this limitation and also have the possibility to access Netflix from multiple devices at the same time, you have to change your subscription and subscribe to a more advanced (and therefore expensive) plan.
How do you say? Do you consider yourself a “clumsy” with technology and are you afraid of not knowing how to complete this operation? Don’t worry, if you want, I’m here to give you a hand! Before we get to the heart of this tutorial and explain yourself how to switch plans on Netflix, it seems only right to tell you which plans are currently available on the platform, with related prices and network requirements.
- Base – costs € 7.99 / month and includes the viewing of all Netflix content in standard definition. Allows access to the platform from only one device at a time. Requires a connection of at least 0.5 / 3.0 megabits per second.
- Standard – costs 11.99 euros / month and includes watching all Netflix HD content from two devices at a time. Requires a connection of at least 5.0 megabits per second.
- Premium – costs 15.99 euros / month and includes watching all Netflix Ultra HD content from four devices at a time. Requires a connection of at least 25 megabits per second.
It should be emphasized that Netflix’s Standard and Premium plans can be shared with other members of your household, perhaps by dividing the monthly expenditure. For this purpose, services such as Together Price may be useful, which allow you to organize the sharing of Netflix accounts and other digital services.
How to change Netflix subscription plan
After the necessary “overview” on Netflix plans, let’s move on to the practical side of this guide and see, together, how to change your subscription on this famous platform.
The operation can be carried out, in a more or less limited way, from computers, smartphones, tablets, video game consoles and Smart TVs. Therefore, choose the device that you think is most comfortable for you and put into practice the instructions you find below.
If you prefer to act from computer, the first step you need to take is to connect to the Netflix home page using your favorite browser (eg. Chrome or Safari). At this point, if you have not already done so, log in to your account by clicking on the button Log in located at the top right, by entering email address / telephone number And password in the appropriate text fields and clicking on the button Log in.
In the unfortunate event that you do not remember your account password, click on the item Need help? (bottom right) and choose whether to receive the link / code to reset Netflix access data via e-mail, SMS or voice call. So follow the instructions on the screen and that’s it.
Once logged in, choose yours user profile (making sure it’s not a “child” account) and wait for the Netflix splash screen to appear. Next, hover your mouse cursor over yours profile picture (top right) and select the item Account from the menu that opens, in order to access the account management page.
At this point, you just have to click on the item Change plan related to the section Plan information (where the plan currently active on your account should be indicated, eg. Premium Ultra HD), select the new plan you want to subscribe from Base, HD standard And Premium Ultra HD and click on the button Continues, to confirm.
Payment will be made, via the payment method set up on your Netflix account, on the date of the subscription renewal.
If you signed up for your Netflix subscription through Apple (then via iTunes / App Store), to change the Netflix plan you need to open the iTunes program and go to the menu Account> View my account of the latter, which is located at the top.
At this point, access your Apple ID, if necessary, by entering the relevant login data, click on the item Manage placed in correspondence of the section Subscriptions (on the page that opens) and click on the link Edit relating to Netflix, to proceed with the change of plan.
If you want to switch Netflix plans and use a device Android, you can act from the app of the famous streaming service or from the browser: in reality there is not much difference between the two solutions, as the app, when you have to actually choose the Netflix plan to subscribe, refers to the use of the browser.
That said, let’s take action. If you want to act from the Netflix app for Android, start the latter and, if necessary, log in to your account (if you do not remember the password, tap on the appropriate item to retrieve it via email, SMS or voice call). Once logged in, select yours user profile (making sure it is not a “for children” profile), then press the ☰ button located at the top left and select the item Account from the menu that appears on the side, in order to be redirected to the section of the Netflix site through which to change the plan.
If you prefer to act as a browser, open instead Chrome (or another navigation app of your choice), connected to the netflix.com/ChangePlan page and log in to your account: you will find yourself in the same page to which the Netflix app refers after pressing the “Account” item.
Well: now you have nothing else to do, except select the plan you prefer the most from Base, HD standard And Premium Ultra HD and press the button Continues, to confirm. Payment will be made on the next renewal of the subscription.
The Netflix app for iOS does not support any function for changing the subscription plan, so you have to act from the browser.
To proceed, then open Safari (or another browser of your choice), go to netflix.com/ChangePlan and log into your account. If you do not remember the password, press on the appropriate item and follow the instructions on the screen to reset the access credentials using e-mail, SMS or call.
Now, choose a Netflix plan from Base, HD standard And Premium Ultra HD and press the button Continues, to confirm. In this way, you will have changed your subscription on the famous video streaming platform. Payment will be made on the next subscription renewal.
You have subscribed to Netflix through iTunes? In this case, to change the plan, you have to act through the iOS settings. Then access the menu Settings, by tapping ongear icon located on the home screen, select the Your name from the screen that opens and go up iTunes and App Store.
At this point, press on yours email address, select the option View Apple ID from the box that is shown to you, tap the option Subscriptions, then that relating to Netflix and change your plan via the screen that is proposed to you. Easy, right?
Video game console
You usually use Netflix through yours PlayStation or yours Xbox and would you like to change the plan you have subscribed to on the famous video on demand service? In this case, I’m sorry to tell you that you can’t change your subscription directly from the Netflix app, but you can still act as a browser, using the web browsing app on the console.
If you use PS4, for example, you can start the application Internet browser present on the home page of the PlayStation menu (by pressing the X controller icon) and connect to netflix.com/ChangePlan.
Once the page has loaded, log in to your account (if you do not remember the password, press the appropriate item and follow the instructions on the screen to reset the login data using e-mail, SMS or call), choose which plan to activate between Base, HD standard And Premium Ultra HD and press the button Continues, to confirm the change.
Payment for the new plan will be made at the next subscription renewal.
Netflix is also available as an app for Smart but, unfortunately, in many cases, it does not allow you to change the subscription plan. It is therefore necessary to act as a browser, using the Web browsing app on the TV or following the classic procedure from a PC.
If you want to act as a TV, the steps you need to take are practically the same as I indicated earlier in the chapter dedicated to video game consoles. Then connect to the netflix.com/ChangePlan page, access your account (or reset your password, in case of loss of login data), choose the plan to activate among Base, HD standard And Premium Ultra HD and press the button Continues, to confirm. Payment will be made at the next renewal of the subscription.
In case, before proceeding, you want to verify the actual absence of an option to change the subscription plan in the Netflix app on your Smart TV, do this: start the application of Netflix, log in to your account, select yours user profile (making sure this is not a “child” profile), access the side menu by pressing the left arrow on the remote control, highlights an item between Settings And Account and press on OK. If the setting to change the plan is available, you will surely find it in one of the screens indicated.
