Windows 11 has been a reality since last month, but since its launch it has raised important questions about compatibility. Uncertainty regarding compatibility has been a common theme among many computer users since Microsoft introduced its first major update to the Windows operating system in six years.

Fortunately, Windows 11 should work with most PCs, according to a Microsoft blog post. However, certain supported devices won’t necessarily get the update just yet – Microsoft set a goal for mid-2022 before all Windows 10 devices can download and install Windows 11.

Incomprehensibly, Microsoft’s own tool for determining device compatibility, the PC Health Check application, was not ready when Microsoft first announced Windows 11. There were reports that it did not give people enough information about why their devices they weren’t supported, therefore the company temporarily removed the app.

But Microsoft’s PC Health Check is now back up and running. The application will tell you if your computer meets the requirements to run Windows 11, and if your PC does not, the tool will tell you why and provide links for further support.

But that’s not the only way to check if your device will work with the free Windows 11 update. You should read on for all the options to check for Windows 11 device compatibility. With Windows 11 officially released, it’s a good idea to check if you can use it on your computer. If your device does not meet the eligibility requirements, you may need to replace your PC by 2025, as Microsoft will remove Windows 10 in the next few years.

Option 1 – Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check application to see if your computer can run Windows 11

You should follow these steps to test if your PC meets the system requirements to install Windows 11.

  • Download Microsoft’s PC Health Check Open the file, you must accept the terms of service and click Install. Make sure the box that says Open PC Health Check is checked and click Finish.
  • The application home page that appears says “PC health at a glance.” At the top, a box says “Introducing Windows 11” Click Check Now.
  • If your machine is not supported, you will see a message that says, “This PC does not currently meet the Windows 11 system requirements,” and it will provide more information about it.
  • If your machine is compatible, you can download the Windows 11 update for free. The official release date for Windows 11 was October 5, but Microsoft is planning a staggered release and many devices won’t see the update until 2022.

Option 2 – Test the WhyNotWin11 application for compatibility with Windows 11

An open source application called WhyNotWin11 is a good alternative to the PC Health Check application.

The application is available on Github and was created by a developer not affiliated with Microsoft. This one has a less friendly interface, but it should give you more information and go into more detail about various potential compatibility issues.

Option 3 – Consult Microsoft’s list of system specifications for Windows 11

To determine if your current PC will be able to run Windows 11, you can consult the list of system specifications on the Microsoft website or check the table that I will show you later … If your machine is compatible, you can download the Windows 11 update for free when available.
