The app StorySign was first released in December 2018 to help improve story time for deaf children and their parents. The app’s user-friendly avatar, “Star”, translates selected children’s books into real-time sign language, providing a perfect reading experience for deaf children and their parents. The translation of words, made by “Estrela”, helps parents and children to learn to read together, at their own pace, opening up the world of books and enriching these magical moments at the time of history. Currently, there is only one book available for each country.

There are approximately 32 million deaf children worldwide, and many of them struggle to learn to read, due to the lack of resources to bridge the differences between sign language and reading. Through the application StorySign, Huawei aims to raise awareness of deaf children’s literacy, reaching a wider audience and inspiring more people to get involved as the project evolves.

Upon launching the application, Huawei encouraged people to contribute through the website. StorySign, having raised the amount to support literacy projects for deaf children across Europe. At this time, Huawei’s focus is to ensure that the StorySign become a long-term resource that is continually growing and can benefit the deaf community.
