O iPhone 12 has undergone a battery test which shows that the new models have very poor battery life with 5G data.

The Toms Guide website subjected the two new models to the standard battery life test.

The Test consists of surfing the web continuously with 150 nits of screen brightness, opening a new website every 30 seconds until the battery runs out.

But this time, it added an additional element.

For the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, they did this test on 5G and 4G, and the difference was brutal.

The iPhone 12 managed 10h 23m on 4G, but dropped to 8h 25m on 5G – a drop of 1h 58m.

The iPhone 12 Pro dropped even more, from 11:24am to 9:6am – a drop of 2:00-18m.

The site also compared Android 5G smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy phones generally lasted the The Samsung Galaxy S20 lasted 9:31 on 5G, but dropped to 8:04 on 120Hz.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus lasted 10:31 on 5G, which is almost 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 Pro. Samsung’s phone runtime has dropped to 8:55 at 120Hz, which is slightly worse than the iPhone 12 Pro on 5G.

The OnePlus 8T is another Android phone that outperforms the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. It achieved a runtime of 10:49 at 60Hz and 9:58 at 120Hz, both on 5G.

Google’s Pixel 5 was almost an hour better than the iPhone 12 at 9:56; dropped to 9:29 with the screen set to a faster 90Hz refresh rate. Both times are much better than the 8:25 result of the iPhone 12 on 5G.

Apple is clearly aware of the issue as it has added a feature to iOS to intelligently switch between slower and faster data speeds.

Apple claims it has optimized iOS to take advantage of 5G speeds while maintaining energy efficiency. iPhone 12 features a Smart Data mode that intelligently switches between 4G and 5G data speeds. Ideally, Apple says customers will see download speeds of 3.5Gbps.
