MediaTek Wants to Use Artificial Intelligence in High-Tech Smartphone Chipsets
MediaTek is known for providing high-quality components for low-cost products, which has kept it out of the mainstream. Digitimes says that offering high-performance Chipsets for low-end devices usually works when a “latecomer” enters a market with the objective of immediate market share.
According to Digitimes, MediaTek is looking for ways to get their Chipsets inside top smartphones. A report published yesterday says the Taiwanese Chipset designer has been talking to smartphone makers like Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi in an attempt to find “opportunities for business cooperation”. MediaTek is known for providing high-quality components for low-cost products, which has kept it out of the mainstream.

Digitimes says that offering high-performance Chipsets for low-end devices usually works when a “latecomer” enters a market with the objective of immediate market share. But when a company like MediaTek starts adding top-notch features like artificial intelligence, it can prevent that company from gaining access to high-end phones. This may be why MediaTek was unable to gain traction with the Helio X30, leading MediaTek to stop producing and developing its Helio X Chipsets for high end devices.
MediaTek plans to use its artificial intelligence technology to sell Chipsets in different markets including computers, communications, consumer electronics and automotive industries. As far as the smartphone industry is concerned, MediaTek has to deal with the fact that several manufacturers are designing their own AI technology integrated into their SoCs. And, of course, Qualcomm continues to take precedence in chipsets for US-bound devices (although things could change next month after the FTC v. Qualcomm test). Speaking of AI, MediaTek recently unveiled the Helio P90, made for mid-range phones. Produced using the 12nm process, the SoC includes a multi-core AI processing unit (APU) that delivers 4 times the AI performance found in the P60 and P70 Chipsets. The APU allows phone manufacturers to offer customers the ability to take high quality photos while using more affordable phones.
