No sound on Windows 10? Here’s how to fix it

There is nothing worse than starting a Netflix video game or movie on your Windows 10 device only to find that the sound doesn’t work. If you are experiencing sound problems, you can try several things. Here are some tips to diagnose and fix the problem.

Cause of no sound on Windows 10

While hardware problems are sometimes attributable to audio failures, software is often the culprit. The big Windows 10 updates add a lot of new features, for example, but they can also add new problems. The patch may conflict with older sound drivers or sound card manufacturer software.

How to fix audio not working on Windows 10

  1. Check the cables and volume. Make sure that the speakers or headphones are plugged into the appropriate jacks and that the volume is turned up. Next, check the volume levels. To do this: right-click on the icon speaker in the taskbar, then select Volume Mixer from the list of options.

Some speakers or headphones have their own apps with volume controls. You may need to check there as well.

  2. Make sure your audio device is the default one. If your speakers or headphones use a USB or HDMI port, you may need to set that device as the default. To do so:

    1. Type ” Audio ”In the Windows 10 search box, then select Audio from the list of results.
    2. Select the tab Reproduction (if you’re not already there), then select your audio device.
    3. Select Set default .

  3. Restart your PC after an update. Many Windows 10 updates require you to restart your device after installation, and if you haven’t done so already, it could cause the sound problem. So, save your work, close all applications and quickly restart your computer.

  4. Try a System Restore. If there is still no sound after installing the updates, you can try to go back to a previous system restore point. Windows creates one every time it installs an update on the device, in case there is a problem.

  5. Run the Windows 10 audio troubleshooter. It can diagnose and fix a variety of common audio problems. To use it:

    1. Type ” audio troubleshooting ”In the Windows 10 search box.
    2. Select Find and fix audio playback problems .
    3. When the troubleshooter appears, simply follow the on-screen instructions.

    2. Double click Sound, video and game controllers , then double-click the sound card.
    3. Select the tab Driver , then select Update Driver .

If Windows can’t find a new driver, you’ll need to get one from the sound card manufacturer’s website.

  7. Uninstall and reinstall the audio driver. If the Windows 10 audio driver update doesn’t work, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling it. Find your sound card again in Device management , then right-click and select Uninstall . Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver after restarting the computer.
