There will soon be a web icon for online advertisements

In the spirit of self-regulation, the US advertising industry has agreed to mark targeted, so-called “behavioral ads” on the Internet with an “i” highlighted in blue. As the New York Times reports, all online advertisements that use demographic and behavioral data of users or are based on it will be shown with the symbol.

The idea was to create a symbol that users can easily remember and then link to the corresponding information behind it, according to the Future of Privacy Forum, which worked on the implementation. This should make it clear at a glance in the future when it comes to targeted advertising.

Most of the larger companies are expected to start putting the new icon next to their online advertisements in the summer. When a user clicks on it, they will be redirected to a page that explains the symbol and its purpose. The introduction took place in the course of a broad debate about online privacy and data protection on the Internet. The American Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has already criticized the fact that the data protection guidelines of the companies are not clear enough and is discussing the extent to which user data is currently being used appropriately.

But it is still too early to assess how useful the icon will be for consumers, says Maneesha Mithal, Associate Director Privacy and Identity Protection at the FTC: “We support the industry in their endeavors to develop a permanent symbol that informs consumers about online advertising. ” pte
