Xiaomi Mi Android TV Box review: an affordable 4K HDR streaming device

I had no plans to use an external TV decoder as my Sony TV is already integrated with Android TV. It allows me to watch live TV and run almost every streaming app available on the Play Store. Therefore, I expected the Xiaomi Mi Android TV Box it would offer the same experience, no more, no less.

Surprisingly, I am still using Mi Box until now. What are the advantages of the product?

Design features

The product comes in a simple cardboard box, but it has everything inside, including the TV box, a remote control, a power adapter, and an HDMI cable. The Mi Box somewhat reminds me of Amazon products, as the exterior is made of matte black plastic. This is not an attractive design, but I appreciate that the case is very small and thin, this helps me hide it in the settings.

Setting up Mi Box is pretty straightforward, I just need to plug in the power and HDMI cable to the box, follow the on-screen instructions, and it’ll be ready to go in a few minutes. A minor issue is that the included HDMI cable is too short since I mounted my TV on the wall.

On the back of the Mi Box, there is a 3.5mm audio port, an HDMI port, a USB port, and a power port. There is no power indicator, so sometimes I can’t tell if the Mi Box is turned on or not.

The wireless remote is just great. It has a minimalist design with just a power button, a D-pad, a back button, a home button, a voice search button, and a volume up / down button. I really love that this is a Bluetooth remote and has a built in mic so it still works perfectly at a far distance or when something blocks the way from the remote to the TV box.

Performance

Once Android TV starts up, I can see the familiar interface as it does on my Sony TV. However, I immediately saw the difference when I started surfing. The Android experience in this box is incredibly smooth. There are no more lags, hiccups, or freezing. Obviously, the 2GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 processor and 2GB of RAM have taken the Android experience to the next level.

The processor is powerful enough to play 4K videos, yet somehow 4K playback isn’t smooth at all. Tried connecting it to my Dell 4K monitor and saw a drop in frame rate. This would make your crisp 4K movies choppy and therefore less enjoyable. Performance is somewhat disappointing, as the smaller and cheaper Chromecast Ultra can stream 4K video quite well. I really hope the issue is addressed and fixed in the next firmware update.

In terms of content, I have no complaints as all the most popular streaming apps are here. You can find Youtube, Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu, ESPN, Plex, VLC, etc. And it’s even better as most of the content I purchased is easily accessible through Google Play Movies & TV and Google Play Music. You can even download the Amazon Instant Video app to watch movies on your Amazon Prime account.

Cons

The Xiaomi Mi Android TV Box is a great product for Android fans. It would be an easy recommendation if you could play 4K content smoothly. At this price, the Mi Box will have plenty of competitions from Amazon’s Fire TV and Google Chromecast Ultra. You can also see many TV boxes for sale here.
