Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus and its 6-inch 18: 9 screen offer a comfortable experience and good performance at an unbeatable price. For about 210 euros, Xiaomi offers with the Redmi 5 Plus a smartphone with a large 6-inch screen with Full HD + and 18: 9 definition.

At the heart of the device, we find a Snapdragon 625 processor clocked at 2 GHz, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory (expandable micro SD) and a 12MP rear camera. If the Redmi 5 Plus takes the sleek design of its little brother, it is undeniably better equipped.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus design

If you’ve ever seen a Redmi 5, you won’t feel confused picking up the Redmi 5 Plus. From the aluminum back to the edge-to-edge screen with rounded corners, Xiaomi has (almost) changed nothing.

The fingerprint sensor is always under the rear camera, the volume buttons and those for unlocking the device remain on the right side of the phone. There is the LED on the top right that alerts you when you receive notifications or when your phone is charging and we also find the USB Type-C port.

In hand, the Redmi 5 Plus hides its low-cost phone status. At 180 grams, the device is quite heavy although its all-metal design improves its quality.

Everything has been well thought out, Xiaomi has managed to offer an ergonomic device despite its large size. It’s as easy to use for surfing the web as for making a call. Only downside: the fingerprint sensor is a bit too high. It is more difficult to unlock the smartphone with your finger on the Redmi 5. Sometimes you need to put your finger on it twice.

Real improvement over the smaller version: the screen. With Redmi 5 Plus, Xiaomi offers a 5.99-inch IPS panel with Full HD + definition (2160 x 1080 pixels). With its 18: 9 aspect ratio and rounded edges, the smartphone is simply impressive at this price point.

The screen remains of excellent quality and enjoys a significant resolution of 403 dpi. Ideal to keep it always with you, where the Redmi 5 Plus can easily become the perfect partner for watching a TV series in streaming. Especially with a maximum brightness of 578 cd / m2 and a contrast ratio of 1180: 1, the screen is perfectly readable in every situation.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus – Software

Android 7.1.2, the Redmi 5 Plus is equipped with MIUI 9.2, the latest version that features all Xiaomi devices. In short, MIUI is simply a perfect copy of the design of the iOS, Android version. Starting with the widgets on the left, the clear menus, animations, square icons with rounded edges or the multitasking interface.

Despite this similarity, MIUI offers some ideas that stand out. For example, the creation of a “Second Space”, accessible with another fingerprint. The ability to lend the smartphone to the child safely. Another good idea is application cloning. You can create a second version of your favorite email (Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Snapchat…), to manage two accounts at the same time.

Xiaomi also allows you to control your television or decoder via infrared, directly from the locked screen. We are only sorry that it is impossible to manually pair a remote control: only the devices selected by the brand – there are many fortunately – are configurable.

The device also includes an FM radio, something rare enough to be reported.

Despite the desire to offer a simple interface like iOS while enjoying some advantages of Android (such as split screen), Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus sometimes suffers from some optimization problems and this, despite its 3 GB of RAM.

Several times using three basic applications (Facebook, Camera, Instagram), we noticed that the phone was closing the applications. Despite its efforts, Xiaomi has not yet managed to make MIUI the true equivalent of iOS on Android.

Updates could correct the situation. In the meantime, be aware that there is a 4GB / 64GB version for just $ 30 more.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus battery

With its 4000 mAh battery, the Redmi 5 Plus has the best autonomy… and despite a high definition screen it does not consume much power, two days without the need to recharge, as long as your use remains reasonable.

Performance of Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus

In terms of performance, the Redmi 5 Plus shouldn’t disappoint you. Thanks to its Snapdragon 625 processor, playing simple titles like The Sims or Riptide GP are no problem. With the latter, configured in optimal quality (with a high level of detail), no lag is noticeable.

Cameras of Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus

Equipped with a 12 MP photo sensor, the Redmi 5 Plus does not disappoint. Overall, its images are pretty sharp (high and low light), but the camera has a surprising tendency to darken photos or slightly distort some colors. For example, the images taken by the Redmi 5 Plus appear much darker than those taken by the Redmi 5, identical shots.

Given its price, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus camera remains quite satisfactory despite these shortcomings.

The front camera did not disappoint us. The images are beautiful and the “beauty” mode that smoothes the skin (a mode loved by Asians) offers rather appreciable photos while having the advantage of being able to be disabled.

Curious enough, Xiaomi tries to identify your age with selfies but tends to age the youngest and rejuvenate the older ones. In other words: we would like to do without it!

Xiaomi redmi 5 Plus’s camera, meanwhile, is a bit disappointing… not because of its image quality, up to 4K, but its lack of stabilization. Videos also shake when you hold the camera firmly, with no function to correct the problem.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus price

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has a price of 190 €, which rise to 247 € for the mid-range variant with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. These are really very interesting prices for products that are unlikely to ever disappoint for the price.

Conclusion

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is in the top 10 of our rankings and offers the luxury of being the cheapest smartphone in this category. With its Full HD + 18: 9 screen, unique design, excellent battery life and good ergonomics, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus offers excellent value for money. Only one flaw, the software optimization problems.
