Yahoo! will remove all content from Yahoo Groups on December 14, 2019.
Yahoo! removal announcement Yahoo Groups and its content looks like the beginning of the end of a sub-site that is now a relic of a bygone age of the internet.
Even though Yahoo Groups services are not widely used today, by browsing service catalogs today, you can still find groups with thousands of members, with some groups still active this year.
Unfortunately, it seems that almost the entire history of the internet will be erased. IN support document Yahoo says it will remove all content posted to Yahoo Groups on December 14th. And it will largely close this service even earlier, as you won’t be able to upload new content to groups starting Monday, October 21, 2019.
Before the old content is deleted, all you can do in Yahoo Groups is browse the group directory, request an invitation to one of them, and if you are in a group, email that group.
As part of the changes, each public group will become restricted or private. You can still find them, but you can join by invitation only. Some data may be saved by the Internet Archive.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Yahoo shut down groups completely in the future – at least, it seems like an important part of Internet history is about to disappear.
