Jabra Evolve2 85 headphones review

Jabra Evolve2 85 headphones review

J.abra Evolve2 85 is the second model of headphones from the Evolve2 series that I had the opportunity to test. How has this professional headset designed for frequent and long conference calls proven in practice? Is it worth its considerable price? Is it worth paying a little extra, or maybe it is better to focus on the slightly cheaper and less advanced Jabra Evolve2 65 Elite model? Let’s check …

First impression

The Jabra Evolve2 85 headset is packed in a typical Jabra dark gray recycled cardboard box. The box contains information about the technical specifications of the headphones and information about the standard of the hardware key inside the packaging. This is quite important information and it is better not to overlook it when buying headphones.

What will we find in the box?

In the middle of the package you will find a case with headphones and accessories as well as a desktop charger. Printed materials have been kept to a minimum. Only the legally required booklet with warranty conditions and certificates of compliance is included with the headphones. The typical brochure manual has been abandoned. Instead, a diagram of the headphones is printed on the inside of the box, along with a description of all the controls. It is enough to get started, and the full manual can be downloaded from the Internet.

The hard and durable case includes headphones and accessories in the form of: dongle, USB-C cable, 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm audio cable and adapter for aviation headphones. The dongle is required for the Jabra Evolve2 85 extended collaboration with Microsoft Teams. Each accessory has its place in the case, so when you close the workplace, it is easy to check that we have taken everything and no elements are left on the desk.

I liked the care with which the case was designed. It is equipped with various handles and spacers. Inside there is a place for a pocket for cables and accessories, as well as a tab with instructions on how to assemble the headphones. The user-friendliness exam passed with a high five.

Jabra Evolve2 85 headphones are available in two color versions. My test kit was black and gray, there is also a beige variant on sale.

The materials from which the headphones are made are of high quality and look quite durable. The build quality of the headphones is impressive. After adjusting the earcups, you do not hear any creaking or creaking noises. Importantly, all surfaces are matte, so there are no unsightly fingerprints on them.

The design of the headphones is quite interesting, as they fold flat, making them very handy, easy to pack and carry in a case.

The lower part of the headband is covered with a soft foam that ensures high comfort. The headphones lie securely on the head without causing too much pressure. This is important because you need to spend many hours a day in such equipment.

The lining of the earcups is made of thick leather, which provides the highest comfort to the ears and perfectly insulates from ambient sounds. No wonder, Jabra is renowned for its excellent headsets for professional use.

Both the left and right earcups have a built-in microphone. Of course, there’s also a boom mic that can be rotated to point towards your mouth. Like the other models, the boom mic is not detachable, but can be easily hidden in the right earcup. Thanks to this, these headphones can also be conveniently used outside the office. There is also a mute button on the boom.

Battery and charging

According to the manufacturer’s data, the headphones can work up to 37 hours when fully charged. However, it must be remembered that reaching this maximum time is related to how we use headphones.

The headphones will work for 37 hours if we use them to play music, with ANC turned off. We will listen to music for 32 hours with the ANC function on. If we use Jabra headphones for teleconferences, they will work for up to 30 hours with the ANC mode turned off. And if we turn on the ANC and additionally the LEDs informing about the occupation, the working time will be reduced to 20 hours.

I believe that for a device that offers such high-quality sound, the result is quite good. For a full two days of work, the battery is more than enough.

There are two ways to charge the headphones. Either with the help of the charging base included in the set, or with a cable connected directly to the charger.

I will not hide that with the charging base attached to the Evolve2 65 headphones, which I tested previously, I did not like me completely. The one that comes with the Evolve2 85 has a completely different design, and while it doesn’t look like it at all, it’s very convenient to use. The headphones on the base can be placed practically without looking, everything goes to its place, so if someone likes order on the desk, he can quickly put the headphones on the charger even between calls.

As I mentioned, in the lower edge of the right ear cup there is an additional USB-C socket that allows you to charge the headphones without using the stand. It is very convenient when we use the headphones outside the home or office.

The Jabra Evolve2 85 headphones work in both wireless and wired modes. In wireless mode, you can pair them with up to 8 devices and use 2 Bluetooth connections at the same time. Combined, it has a range of up to 30m. It is worth remembering that when using extended functions dedicated to Microsoft Teams, it is required to use a dongle. My kit included a Bluetooth USB-A dongle, but other options are also available as an option. In wired mode, you only need to use the 3.5mm jack socket.

Although both earcups have a lot of buttons and switches, the Jabra Evolve2 85 headset is very easy to use. The buttons are arranged in a logical way and it’s easy to remember which one is where. The distances between the individual controls are optimal – so small that you don’t have to search for buttons all over the earpiece, and large enough not to press anything by mistake.

The left earcup has a power switch, LED indicator, USB-C charging port and audio jack, and two contact points for the desktop charger. They are placed on the side of the ear cup, making it easy to place the headphones on the charging base.

The right ear cup has a large button that doubles as the answer or end button. There are also multimedia keys such as Play, Pause, and Skip.

The comfort of conversations is improved by a boom with a microphone. Unfortunately, it is not as comfortable as in the Jabra Evolve2 65 Elite model, but it has the advantage that it is completely hidden in the earmuff, thanks to which the Evolve2 85 model can also be used outside the office without causing a sensation.

The Jabra Evolve2 65 headset works with all Bluetooth enabled devices. It can be connected to a smartphone, computer or Apple TV, but there is one catch. In order to use all the special functions for handling Microsoft Teams, it is necessary to use the USB dongle included in the set, so in this case only the computer is included in the game. Headphone pairing is very intuitive. So is their subsequent service. Throughout the testing period, the cooperation of the headphones with the iPhone, MacBook and Apple TV ran without problems.

The Jabra Sound + app is available for free download in app stores. Thanks to it, you can configure the headphones, update the software or check the battery charge. The app also includes an equalizer with several predefined profiles. You can also create your own sound profiles. With the help of the application, you can also start the so-called soundscape or sounds that will help in focusing or isolating from the environment. The Find my Jabra feature helps you locate the place where you have recently used the headphones. The service is not as functional as Find my from Apple, nevertheless it will give you a rough idea of where we left the headphones.

Microsoft Teams support

The flagship feature of the Jabra Evolve2 85 headset is cooperation with Microsoft Teams. When you connect the headphones to your computer using the dongle, they are selected as the default audio device for Microsoft Teams conference calls.

The button dedicated to Microsoft Teams allows you not only to answer or end a call. You can use it to launch Teams and bring it to the top of the desktop, open the meeting intro screen or start voicemail.

In addition, there are LEDs on the earpiece that inform you that we are currently having a conversation and should not be disturbed. On the one hand, it is such a good thing, on the other hand, when you work at home, where other household members are, such a warning light visible from a distance is a clear signal to keep silence. However, you have to remember that the busy signaling has quite a significant impact on the working time of the headphones.

Sound quality

When it comes to sound quality, this headset has performed spectacularly. And no wonder, because firstly we are dealing with a top model, and secondly, Jabra is a company specializing in headsets for call-center or communication.

Although the Evolve2 85 is not cheap, it does offer a lot for the price you have to pay for it. It has many different aspects that most headsets lack. Moreover, they are very versatile. Are you done with your work and want to listen to music or play a game? When using Evolve2 85, you don’t have to worry about the sound quality, because it is excellent, like in a mid-range gaming headset.

Like most of the more expensive Jabra headsets, the Evolve2 85 also supports the ANC function, i.e. active noise reduction. The noise reduction of this headset perfectly blocks all sounds without compromising voice quality. How much it can facilitate work, you do not need to convince anyone who works in an open office or at home, where noisy ambient sounds are the norm.

The perfectly working ANC function is supported by the well-constructed earmuffs. They are compact, adhere perfectly to the head and provide high comfort, even when used for many hours.

The sound quality recorded by the Jabra Evolve2 85 is amazing. The set uses 10-microphone technology, including a boom microphone. Interestingly, depending on your preferences and working conditions, the boom microphone may or may not be used. Sure, the sound picked up by the boom microphone will still sound better, but if it gets in the way of walking, you can opt out of the other microphones. Regardless of the choice of microphones, the sound is captured very well.

When I started the tests, I was very curious to what extent the Jabra Evolve2 85 headset is better than the Jabra Evolve2 65 Elite. From the design side, both models of headphones are quite similar. On the Evolve2 65 Elite, I really liked the boom microphone, and the Evolve2 85 have a much more comfortable charging base. Is it worth paying extra for a higher model? Definitely yes. Due to one but not insignificant function – ANC.

Automatic noise reduction is stunning. It allows you to enter a completely different world of sound. No, I’m not exaggerating. ANC works spectacularly. The Jabra Evolve2 85 headphones will prove themselves exceptionally well not only for office use, but also for entertainment. Thanks to the retractable boom with microphone, these headphones let you go for a walk, giving the impression that you have just escaped from the office.

The value for money and value for money is perfect for these headphones. There is only one verdict: if you have a budget high enough to afford this headset, you must consider the Jabra Evolve2 85 headphones when planning to buy new headphones.
