Live text: Yahoo launches silent video messaging app

Yahoo wants to get back into the messaging market. After the once popular Yahoo Messanger was left behind by competitors such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Snapchat, Yahoo is now launching its own mix of video and text app: Live Text.

As reported by The Verge, the company presented its new program on Thursday in Manhattan. Livetext is available for the iOS operating system in the iTunes store as well as for Android users and is supposed to be a mixture of video and chat app, a kind of fusion of applications such as Periscope and WhatsApp. Each message begins with a live stream, which only works visually – the app only transmits visual information. The actual messages are transmitted via text chat, which is superimposed on the live stream.

The combination of moving images and text is somewhere between Snapchat and GIF and, according to the company, should create a new kind of closeness between users.

Livetext is Yahoo’s attempt to re-enter the messaging market after competitors such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Co. had gained sovereignty in the messaging market. How exactly the internet company wants to earn money with the offer is still unclear. “We want to find an audience first. When we have that, there will be plenty of monetization opportunities, ”said Adam Cahan, vice president of Yahoo.
