A modder has a map of Bloodbornes Upper Cathedral Ward Dark Souls Remastered extracted and in Grand Theft Auto V open. Now you can drive in this part of the cathedral.

It’s hard to decide which is stranger here. Why is a level playable in a 2015 game in a 2018 remaster of a game originally released in 2011? And why the hell is Trevor walking out Grand Theft Auto V around this map? Dropoffthe modder who achieved this feat, answers some of these questions.

The level data is located within Dark Souls Remastered’s extensive data in its own level file, which has the rather anonymous name “m99_99_98_00”. The level files starting with “m99” are in Souls Often play test files, why Dropoff these in his search for interesting leftover test content Remastered first took a closer look.

The level architecture of the extracted map is a little different from the version included in Bloodborne is playable. The entrance, gate and bridge are identical, but the area outside the building that is in Bloodborne can be found is missing in this test version, although the interior of the building is largely identical (here for comparison a video the final published version). Lance McDonaldanother modder and “data digger” who Souls series, posits that what ultimately became the Upper Cathedral Ward was originally created during the development of the first Dark Souls had been created.

Here’s a look at the early prototype of Bloodborne’s “Upper Cathedral Ward” map that was left behind in the Dark Souls REMASTERED files. It was created a long time ago back when Dark Souls was in development. It’s not new work by the REMASTERED team. pic.twitter.com/BKBVGl1o8t

Discovered in the same group of files MC Donald part of the Boletaria level of Demon’s Souls.

Dark Souls Remastered also contains a left behind copy of a small early chunk of Bolataria from Demon’s Souls. pic.twitter.com/IivrPAusIq

But what about Trevor and his car? Dropoff explains that he has the level file from Remastered extracted and then imported into “3D software” which allowed him to repackage them and use them Grand Theft Auto V to open. He learned how to do this with the help of Tutorials, which makes me question why I waste my free time. After all, I can’t find any interesting test cards in a single video game.

It’s fascinating that this map may have existed before 2011, and it’s fantastic that you can drive across the Upper Cathedral Ward Bridge, and it’s great that there are people who care about such things. I’m curious to see if Trevor discovers anything interesting in this unfinished level…
