Nintendo Switch overtook PS3 and Xbox 360 in total sales
PlayStation is still the undisputed leader in the console market, but the Nintendo Switch is slowly climbing to the top with 89 million devices sold.
While the latest generation of video game consoles, Microsoft’s Sony PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X remain notoriously hard to find nine months after their November 2020 premieres, Nintendo is seizing its opportunity in the industry. Since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020, the company’s flagship console, the Nintendo Switch, has been selling like hot cakes and becoming one of the most successful home consoles in Nintendo’s long history of hits and failures.
To date, Nintendo has sold over 89 million Switch units, surpassing Nintendo Entertainment System, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, becoming the fifth best-selling console of all time. As the chart below shows, Sony has dominated the gaming industry for the last two and a half decades, with three of its PlayStation consoles taking the podium in the Hall of Fame.
According to official Sony data, the company has sold over 155 million PS2 units since its release, making it the most successful home video game console by far. After its release in 2000, PlayStation 2 became an instant hit and was popular for a very long time. Although its successor appeared in 2006, the PS2 remained in production until 2013 as an inexpensive entry-level system.
