Rock star has not yet released a single player DLC pack for Grand Theft Auto V. Since the game came out quite a long time ago, it’s safe to assume there won’t be one at all. One of the reasons for this? Take Two Interactivethe game’s publisher, never tires of bragging about how much money Grand Theft Auto Online brings in.
Take Two recently presented its quarterly financial report. It goes into some detail about how much money GTA Online flushed into the coffers:
-
During the holidays it had the “best week ever for both revenues and active players during this holiday season.” (In other words, a lot of people played it and spent money on microtransactions.)
-
It is predicted that GTA Online will bring in even more money next year.
The company declined to elaborate on how much money exactly GTA Online is generated, but there are a few clues in what Take Two announced:
Starting with our results for the fiscal third quarter, net revenue was $486.8 million as compared to $954 million in last year’s third quarter, which had benefited from a more extensive release slate. This result exceeded our outlook range of $400 million to $450 million due primarily to stronger than expected revenues from Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. In addition, NBA 2K16 exceeded our expectations.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if GTA Online would bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in profit, which could easily explain why plans for a single-player DLC pack were quietly buried.
The video game analyst Michael Pachterwhich some of you may have heard of, apologized for this in an analyst note Take Twos DLC strategy to have been criticized. He now predicts that Take Two Could make $250 million a year doing this:
…the fervor with which players have embraced GTA Online suggests that it can deliver $250 million per year for several more years. Should Take-Two decide to make the game free-to-play for players who have NOT purchased the underlying console game, it is likely that overall revenues could double, and could be sustained for a very long time. Accordingly, we apologize for questioning management’s strategy, and we see merit in the pursuit of an online strategy.
I’ve never been particularly fond of it GTA Online interested, but it seems like a lot of other players really like it.
