Even before he created his special editions, George Lucas was tinkering star Wars around. An example: If you saw the first film from 1977 in the cinema in 1977, there was no “episode” or even a title that went beyond “Star Wars”. Both were added in 1981 and the changes haven’t stopped since then.
In a very interesting series of videos, YouTube shows users Marcelo Zuniga all these changes, and not just those star Wars but also those The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. You will see that the first film was changed the most. Everything from the addition of “Episode IV A New Hope” and scrolling text in 1981 to the controversial changes in the Special edition from 1997, for example that Greedo shoots first, Jabba the Hutt appears in Mos Eisley and something is different at the end of the X-Wing attack.

Also on The Empire Strikes Back andReturn of the Jedi A number of changes have been made over the years. Empire remains the most original, even if the scream added to Luke’s fall at the end is rejected by many (adjustments to the Wampa fight and Cloud City are widely accepted). To Jedi Not only was the truly embarrassing “Jedi Rocks” sequence in to Jabba’s Palace added, but it was also Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker added to the film’s final moment. There are also many other changes that you can see in the second video below:

It’s entertaining/annoying to see all these changes in the movies, but most of them have been well known for a long time. Some of the more surprising changes include the subtle color and clarity/sharpness adjustments on the 2011 Blu-ray releases. Unfortunately, it seems like the original films are forever in the form in which they were originally released lost. Maybe will Lucasfilm, 20th Century Fox and Disney One day we will find ways to make these versions generally accessible again. Until then, videos like these are among the best ways to tell the story star Wars to preserve.
