Blizzard’s massive multiplayer online game isn’t quite as massive anymore.
World of Warcraft only has eight million subscribers left, publisher Activision-Blizzard announced in a press release yesterday. That means a decline of 1.3 million players since February – especially in the east, as Blizzard reports, but also in the west.
The popular game remains the largest subscription-based MMORPG in the world, but subscriber numbers have been steadily declining since peaking in 2010. World of Warcraft is also one of the last paid MMORPGs, as almost all online games, such as EA’s Star Wars: The Old Republic, now rely on the free-to-play model.
Since Activision-Blizzard still receives money from eight million people every month, there is no need to worry too much about the company.
