Great Moments in PC Gaming are brief tributes to some of my favorite gaming memories.
Looking back, Lara should have been a daring zoologist. How much can an ancient chalice fetch compared to, you know, a live T. Rex? Be that as it may, one of the standout moments when it comes to 3D boss fights – only Quake’s first Fiend’s attack comes close – was something a generation of gamers were treated to as gun-based therapy for their needs Jurassic Park related nightmares. The T. Rex that lives in The Lost Valley didn’t just stand around and let himself be killed, especially in Tomb Raider: Anniversary he was pretty active, because there were his claws and his jaws combined with… shudder… shitty QTE sequences.
Like all really good boss fights, it took its time. You had already fought a few weak raptors when you entered his realm – a closed valley with a corner that wasn’t suspicious. Going around this one brings you face to face with the very first Mister T, ready to eat Lara’s polygons faster than you can say “Oh damn, it’s a…”
At least until Lara demonstrated why the words “endangered species” are now synonymous with “any animal near Ms. Lara Croft.” At least it was a quick way to die. And probably the last example of its kind?
Haha. No. In the next game two of them appeared at the same time.
