As Grand Theft Auto V was originally released, a theory soon emerged surrounding the races represented in the game. According to some players, the police are treating in GTA not all protagonists are the same. Some players said at the time that Franklin, the African-American character, was more often checked by the police because of his skin color (racial profiling).
This belief spread thanks to the following video posted by scudpunk was uploaded, quickly among the players. The clip shows Franklin being killed by cops after saying something completely innocuous to them:
Denied at the time Rock star Accusations that GTA Police officers would have been programmed to behave in a racist manner. “This is absolutely false, the in-game police don’t treat one lead character any differently from the others”, said to Rockstar Buzzfeed. Not only that, but it has been claimed that most of the things players are talking about GTA Police officers said there were isolated incidents or descriptions of very rare occurrences, during which officers arrested or even killed Franklin more often than the other protagonists. There wasn’t enough evidence to prove anything, although this theory is credited with some crazy YouTube videos of overly aggressive police officers. But yesterday the people of tried The Game Theorists , to test players’ claims. They started an experiment to collect reliable data.
To conduct their experiment, people dressed from The Game Theorists kept the characters as neutral as possible and took them to three different police stations in different neighborhoods of Los Santos – Vinewood Station, Paleto Bay Station and South Los Santos Station. Each character went up to the police officers alone and spoke to them five times in each police station. The testers recorded the results. In addition, they also tested what happens when each of the protagonists drives their car to the police officers and honks at them, again five times. These results were also recorded. As a sort of control group, they had each of the characters go near the police officers five times, without provoking them or drawing attention to themselves, to find out what the uniformed officers would do.
What did they find out? Well, in the control situation, the police ignored the protagonist in all fifteen cases – and that makes sense. These police officers were not “provoked.” But in the actual tests with response or honking? Franklin was by far the character most frequently harassed or attacked by police officers:
The Game Theorists try to explain in their video what could be the cause of this – they suggest that the cops’ reactions could depend on how wealthy their precinct is in relation to the socioeconomic status of the character in question. According to this theory, Michael is the least likely to be attacked because he is rich. I’m not sure whether to believe this, but it’s interesting what possible explanations open up. Please skip forward to 3:36 if you want to skip the intro:
At the end of their video point out The Game Theorists specifically point out that their experiment does not prove that the police officers in GTA V are racists. The result could also be coincidence. But this experiment is at least much more formal than the gaming experience reports on which people’s conclusions have been based.
