On May 23, Star Wars concept artist Colin Cantwell died. He was 90 years old.
Cantwell was born in San Francisco in 1932. During the Space Race he worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA. In 1969, Cantwell took part in the broadcast of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 Space Odyssey was his first film work. Cantwell is best known for Star Wars: it was he who drew the X-Wing and TIE Fighter fighters, the Star Destroyer cruiser and the Death Star.
According to the artist’s wife Sierra Dall (Sierra Dall), he died at his home in Colorado. Cantwell suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in the last years of his life.
