When demo videos with huge screens that support multi-touch began to appear on the Internet a few years ago, avid gamers probably had the thought running through their heads: “Isn’t it possible to play some strategy on such a screen?” University of Illinois graduate Arthur Nishimoto also had this idea, and he brought the matter to practical implementation. In collaboration with the Electronic Visualization Laboratory, he created a Star Wars strategy game for the large touchscreen.
The game is called Fleet Commander. This is a typical multiplayer real-time strategy game – players build troops and send them into battle. The main difference from some “Starcraft” is that the action takes place on a huge touchscreen, and all participants in the battle stand shoulder to shoulder, interacting with a single battlefield. The viewer is presented with a truly majestic battle scene: the colliding space fleets are huge, and it is not so easy to understand what is happening. However, I still can’t help but be tempted to try playing.
