The new paid one Death Star Extension for Star Wars Battlefront won’t significantly change the game’s reputation as a “casual shooter” designed for short, chaotic fun, but it does add an interesting mode divided into three stages that ends with the eventual destruction of the Death Star. This new mode at least makes a gaming session feel more meaningful.

I played a few rounds of the new Battle Station mode, which comes to the game with the DLC, today and had quite a bit of fun, although it is confusing at times.

In the first phase you play as Rebels or Imperial troops and attack or defend a Star Destroyer.

The Star Destroyer sequence plays like rounds of Battlefronts popular Walker Assault Mode. If you’re playing on the Rebel side, you’ll need to kill enough enemies to trigger a Y-Wing bombardment. As long as the Y-Wings are bombing, the Star Destroyer is vulnerable. They try to destroy three vulnerable spots on the huge ship and then blow up the bridge. If you play on the Imperial side, you will have to defend the Star Destroyer and ensure that the Rebels advance as slowly as possible.

I don’t know what happens if both sides fail to achieve their goal, but in the match where my Rebel team successfully destroyed the Star Destroyer, they then flew into the Death Star’s hangar.

Once inside, the rebels must rescue R2-D2 and take him to an extraction point. The player who reaches R32 continues playing as the droid. Note: It’s very bad when Darth Vader shows up!

The third phase of Battle Station is another Star Fighter battle. It’s about the iconic Death Star Trench Run (flight through the trench). The game selects three Rebel players who must attempt to master this flight while the remaining Rebel pilots fly over the surface of the Death Star and attempt to distract the Imperial defenders. The chosen players fly through a series of checkpoints while being pursued by Imperial players.

If the three selected Rebel pilots fail in the trench and there is still time left, the game will select three more pilots to try their luck. If someone does everything right, the Death Star is history.

The three phase design is a good idea. Integrating some of the game’s maps and modes into a larger adventure makes a gaming session that much more satisfying, even if it’s initially confusing how one stage affects the next. In one of the three matches I played, the Rebel team won the second phase, but instead of the Death Star trench run, the game reverted to the first Star Destroyer phase. It is also not clear how much influence a team’s performance in one phase has on the next. I’ll have to play more often to say for sure. Despite some confusing details, Battle Station can be said to be a step forward for the game’s overall design.

Speaking of confusion, this Death Star DLC Pack is currently only available for Season Pass owners, but will also be released generally in the next few weeks and will then cost $15. If you can’t find a way to purchase this expansion, that’s why.
