But I’m not disappointed
The upcoming release of Star Wars Battlefront is viewed skeptically by many, which cannot be blamed on anyone. Finally is E.A involved – constantly lurking in the shadows and ready to rip off consumers.
This week, however, the publisher not only confirmed that there will be no microtransactions in this game, but also started a beta test, initially for the press, and two days later also for the general public. Sure, there are some extras for those who pre-order, but overall I don’t think this one is Battlefront will be a disaster.
Yesterday I had the chance to play the beta on the PS4 and my first impression is somewhat mixed. There are currently three game modes available in beta testing: Drop Zone (for up to 16 players), Walker Assault (for up to 40), and Survival (a two-player mode that can be played both online and offline).
In Drop Zone, two teams of eight players each fight for pods that randomly fall from the sky and can always be found individually on the battlefield. Each of the two teams must now try to locate the capsule, take possession of it and hold/defend it until a timer runs out. Once this is accomplished, power-ups will be unlocked/unlocked. Then it’s off to the next capsule. I like that in Drop Zone you have a clear objective to complete and that the timers add more depth to the matches. You never get the feeling that the search for the capsules and their defense is turning into work.
Walker Assault may be intended for 40 players, but it is possible to start a match as soon as there are 10 players in a lobby. In this mode, I noticed a pretty sophisticated and clever matchmaking system that gradually pulls/assigns players in and finds games that are almost full before dumping you into an empty lobby. In this asymmetrical mode, Rebels defend uplink sites/targets to call in Y-Bombers from the Imperials. He leaves classic star Wars Feeling arises, which is largely due to the fact that there are AT-ATs, AT-STs, and Tie Fighters (which are basically killstreak power-ups that you collect on the battlefield). Although the match started with just 10 players, it soon grew into a crazy 20v20 match, so it really felt like you were in one star Wars battle felt.
As for the gameplay, I would like to mention once again that there are no microtransactions, which means that you have to unlock everything using credits. Some things are only available once you reach a certain rank, but that’s nowhere near as bad as other online shooters (at least as far as you can tell now) and the credit system allows players to do so to a large extent to buy exactly the equipment they want – from rifles to thermal detonators. The game uses a card system for equipment (it’s not nearly as crazy as Titanfalls Burn Cards), which allows you to decide what slot each piece of equipment takes up (L1/LB or R1/RB, with an additional slot for Triangle/Y). I also really like the option to switch between first and third person perspective at any time. I don’t miss classes or squads.
When it comes to gunplay, the game sometimes seems…cheap. It looks nice (resolutions up to 4K are possible on the PC) and runs smoothly, especially when you look at the sky and watch large battles between ships, but the fights seem somewhat sluggish. The weapons lack the real “thud” and you never feel like you’re hitting something or being hit. Occasionally a certain time delay (lag) can also be noticed. This is probably due to the fact that it is a beta test, but the game is due to be released very soon, which is why it is concerning.
There are four potential locations listed in the menu for Survival mode (Hoth, Sullust, Endor and Tatooine), but only the latter planet is currently playable. AI battles are also shown, but these are also not available as part of the beta test. It’s basically horde mode, with the difficulty increasing with each wave. Here I was able to try out most of the perks (which are unlocked from the start), such as the vertical jetpack boost, grenade launcher and a temporary boost (reinforcement) of the primary weapon, all of which can only be used at certain time intervals (cooldown). To be completely honest, without a second player this mode quickly becomes boring.
I lost interest after just three waves as there’s nothing new added to the horde formula here. Since you are a simple infantryman and not a hero, there is no real enthusiasm. I probably won’t play this mode very often, maybe a quick session with a friend every now and then. Die-hard fans will probably enjoy the various challenges, such as “no death” runs.
So that’s it Star Wars: Battlefront Beta testing so far. The game is far from bad, but I’m not sure it’s worth the full price. We’ll have a better idea of all the different modes when the game launches next month, but people who primarily play solo should probably wait until that happens Star Wars: Battlefront becomes cheaper.
