The latest excitement in Star Wars: The Old Republic, an MMO that seems to exist primarily so people can complain, has to do with an Ewok. Yes, a cuddly Ewok, the action figure that was always chosen last (even after Mon Mothma) when the two sides assembled teams for battle.

Treek the Bounty Hunter is an Ewok companion for your character that will be available in August. When it was originally announced, you were only supposed to get it if you reached a Legacy Level of over 40 and had a million credits in your pocket. At first there were heated discussions as to whether or not Ewoks could be found in places other than Endor in the Star Wars canon at this time. Besides, how could someone leave Endor and then become a feared bounty hunter? Now it has been announced that players can also easily buy Treek with real money. I know, paying real money for the services of a bounty hunter? In a free-to-play MMO? What the ?

Since everything in gaming has to be a zero-sum argument, players who have the required Legacy Level are extremely upset that everyone who hasn’t can simply use Treek for Cartel Coins, the currency of the Cartel Market, aka the place where things can be bought and sold for real money. Of course, the fact that the game was published by Electronic Arts also plays a role.

“Not everyone has to be able to have everything in the game and this promotes the fact that you should indeed be able to buy anything and bypass requirements,” said one subscriber in the game’s forums. “I have been waiting since February of ‘ 12 for something awesome to come out for legacy level 50 and so far we get absolutely nothing.”

“It’s not P2W but it’s a slap in the face to people that actually played the game long enough to earn a high legacy level,” wrote another. “Thanks for continuing to not value the subs.”

Others don’t take it nearly as badly.

“Honestly, I don’t see that much broad based backlash about Treek,” wrote one player in this thread. “I do see the same handful of players running heavily on the hamster-wheel of faux indignation. But this is true for everything about the game for the most part.”

In any case, it is developments like these that ensure that almost everyone hates free-to-play models. When you can buy everything, you no longer feel like you can get something for free. Additionally, many people are bothered by the fact that their hard work – whatever it takes to reach Legacy Level 40 and 1 million credits – is measured in monetary terms . That’s quite insulting.

However, this is about an Ewok. You’d think that something like this would be immediately recognizable to a casual gamer, because no one in their right mind would willingly walk around with a space teddy bear.
