It seems like the players should be in Star Wars: The Old Republic, will soon be able to move into their own virtual house. At least it seems like this teaser video is for SWTORs SSHP promise this.

SSHP is probably the abbreviation for Super Secret Housing Project, which, in contrast to the Super Secret Space Project (from which the Galactic Starfighter extension was) was really a secret. The revelation was shocking, but since many people on the forums of SWTOR Wildstars house options as a reason for wanting to switch to this game when it comes out this year, it’s not that surprising that E.A and BioWare decided to give the players the opportunity to buy their own place to live.

But at the moment all that is known about homes is what can be seen in the video, as there is no official explanation yet. The teaser shows a Coruscant apartment with a mailbox and a console for character customization. Every character in SWTOR receives his own spaceship on the main planet of his faction and this ship was and is viewed by many as a kind of home/dwelling place, even if options for personal adaptation are largely missing (only things like a mailbox or an auction house terminal can be unlocked). It has long been expected by most players that the ability to decorate and modify your own spaceship would be implemented before the ability to purchase a home.

But perhaps it’s technically easier to build a new space that you can personalize than to modify an existing one to make this possible. The prospect of owning your own apartment is certainly exciting, but a certain degree of skepticism is warranted until it is clear what exactly we can do with these new homes.

I don’t expect the options to be as extensive as those that the Hearthfire Extension for Skyrim offered, but in order to satisfy players who have longed to own their own home, there will have to be many options for decorating the new houses/apartments, about the same size as the apartments in The Sims 3 offer – it may not be possible to change the room layout/floor plan, but the visual design of the interior should be left entirely to the players.

What SWTOR have needed for a long time, are new time-consuming activities that are different from all the time-consuming activities that already exist. Owning a home can be one of these activities, but only if there are enough options.

One thing is clear: BioWare wants to satisfy the loyal players with the upcoming custom homes, because this is one of the oldest requests (along with the desire to play as Togruta and a switch for hoods). The idea is correct, but it still has to become something really worthwhile if you want to make the players happy.
