Grand Theft Auto V will be released on September 17th. The game is already being hotly debated by fans and all sorts of speculation is circulating in the video game industry. But even though the game won’t be around for too long, information about it is still very scarce, especially when it comes to gameplay. Rockstar Games may have introduced the game’s characters and story and discussed it in the trailers, but much of this project, which looks set to be the esteemed developer’s biggest to date, remains shrouded in mystery.
Some answers to the questions made even more urgent by this secrecy may now gradually find their way out of the PR fog. A recently released video compares the few snippets of gameplay that are currently officially available from GTA V with Rockstar’s Max Payne 3. The result is quite interesting, as the “new” GTA V gameplay and its animations are quite similar to Max Payne 3 . It’s assumed that an advanced version of Max Payne 3’s engine will be used for the new game, but the recycling of older animations is more than obvious. This is common practice among video game developers and doesn’t reflect sloppiness or lack of imagination, but it does raise some questions.
Look for yourself:
The biggest question is whether Rockstar was adequately prepared for the announcement of the next-generation consoles. Since they are one of the largest developers/publishers, people will certainly have been informed in a timely manner and received appropriate dev kits. But Rockstar has already announced that the game won’t be coming to next-generation consoles, and this video reinforces the impression that they want to get GTA V to market as quickly as possible before those consoles appear in order to maximize profits. This is of course just speculation, but the next few months will certainly be interesting…
